When I look back at my past, I’m brought to tears by all that God has carried me through. Thank You, Lord!
There are moments when the past returns like a rainstorm. A scent, a song, a familiar street, and before I can steady myself, my eyes fill with tears. Not because I want to live in yesterday, but because I can finally see what I could not see while I was walking through it: God was carrying me.
So much of life is survived in the dark. We make decisions with limited light, whisper prayers that feel thin, and put one foot in front of the other when our hearts are heavy. In those seasons, faith often looks less like soaring and more like simply staying. Yet when we look back, the evidence is unmistakable. The Lord did not merely watch from a distance; He moved close. He strengthened what was trembling, provided what was missing, and protected what we did not even know was in danger.
Scripture invites us to remember. Again and again, God’s people are told to build memorials, to rehearse the story, to tell the next generation what the Lord has done. Why? Because forgetfulness is a quiet thief. It steals our courage for today by erasing God’s faithfulness from yesterday. When we remember, we recover hope. When we recall, we are anchored. When we look back with honest eyes, we recognize that the same God who sustained us then will sustain us now.
Maybe your tears come from losses you didn’t think you’d survive: relationships that ended, dreams that crumbled, grief that felt endless. Maybe they come from the weight of your own mistakes—words you wish you could retrieve, choices you wish you could undo. Or maybe the tears rise because you remember how alone you felt, how afraid you were, how you begged God for a way forward. If that’s you, take heart: your tears are not a sign of weakness. They are a testimony that you made it through, and that you did not make it through alone.
Sometimes God carries us by giving us strength we cannot explain. Sometimes He carries us by sending people at just the right time: a friend who checks in, a mentor who speaks truth, a stranger who shows unexpected kindness. Sometimes He carries us by closing doors that would have harmed us, or by delaying answers until our hearts were ready. And sometimes He carries us by holding us in the quiet, when nothing changes on the outside but something steadies on the inside.
Looking back, I see a pattern: God’s mercy meets me in my most human places. He does not despise the broken, the anxious, or the exhausted. He meets them. He gathers what is scattered. He binds what is wounded. He whispers, “I am with you,” and then He proves it with time.
If you are in a hard season right now, let your future self borrow today’s truth: this chapter will not be the final sentence. God is writing a story that includes redemption. Keep a small record of His help—answered prayers, unexpected provision, glimpses of grace. One day, you will look back and realize that the moments you thought were empty were actually filled with His steady presence.
Today, take a few minutes to revisit the past with God, not to reopen old wounds, but to recognize His hand. Ask Him to show you where He was when you felt abandoned. Ask Him to reveal the gifts you missed because you were focused on surviving. Then, offer Him your tears as worship. Gratitude is sometimes loud with laughter, but it is also holy when it is quiet and trembling.
Thank You, Lord, for carrying me through what I could not carry. Thank You for the nights You guarded me, the days You provided, the mistakes You forgave, and the detours that led me to safety. Thank You for being patient when I was stubborn, gentle when I was ashamed, and faithful when I was afraid. You have been my refuge and my strength, and I am here because You held me.
Prayer: Father, as I look back, I see Your footprints where mine nearly stopped. Turn my tears into praise. Heal what still hurts, redeem what was broken, and strengthen me for what lies ahead. Teach me to remember Your faithfulness and to trust Your heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflection: What is one moment from your past that still brings emotion? Write down how God carried you through it, and thank Him for that specific grace.
